Steak and Broccoli Stir Fry

Fall is a mixed bag; one day it can be breezy and sunny with leaves drifting all around, and the next it can be wet and windy and cold. And I have enough experience with food to know that the windy and cold days turn on a little “comfort food” switch in our brains. You know, the one that says, “Feed me pasta! Feed me cheese! Feed me carbs!”


But if you’ve been reading this blog, you know I don’t follow traditions all too closely. So my new favorite fall comfort food is this steak and broccoli stir fry, seasoned with garlic and soy sauce and topped with sesame seeds. Good any time of year, but perfect for when the view outside the window is pressuring you to stay inside and fatten up for winter.


Steak is a great way to get that full and fattened up feeling without actually eating too much, because of how filling it is. Broccoli provides some vegetable matter and garlic has a myriad of health benefits–but my official reason for using it is that it’s awesome.


The day I made this happened to be almost 80º and humid, but the week is getting colder and I know that those windy days will come and leave me wanting some stir fry.



  • 1 pound steak (I used a thin cut ribeye)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil + extra for the stir fry
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups chopped broccoli
  • 2-4 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds


Slice your steak into ½ inch thick strips against the grain, trimming any excess fat. You can of course keep it on, but I think too much fat messes up the cleaner flavor.

Place your steak in a bowl and toss it with the soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper and let it marinate for 20 minutes.

Pour some sesame oil into a large, high sided sautée pan and turn the heat on medium high. When the oil shimmers, add in your garlic and let it cook for 30 to 45 seconds before tossing in the broccoli. Cook the broccoli for 10 minutes or so, or until the stems are soft but the color is still a vibrant green.

Remove the broccoli, and set the steak in the pan, one layer at a time. The way I cut my steak, it only needed about 30 seconds per side to be medium rare. If you want it more well done, I would suggest around a minute per side, but that’s a preference thing.

Once all the steak is done, throw it all back into the pan and stir it together. Then serve with sesame seeds.
